Failed Journalism and the Rise of WikiLeaks, Anonymous and Occupy Wall Street
Over the past decade, a significant volume of scholarly research has been devoted to the impact of new technologies upon the profession of journalism (mirrored also by popular discussions of the same topic). During this 10-year period we have also witnessed the rise of collabortive activist groups such as WikiLeaks and Anonymous, which have both provided data exposing war crimes and corporate and political corruption used by large-scale news organizations, and – as in the case of Anonymous – begun to branch out into news distribution itself. While a focus on the role of technology is important, such a focus does not address why these groups have emerged, and how their emergence can be connected to the performance of mainstream journalism. In this talk, I would like to suggest that WikiLeaks, Anonymous (and large-scale activist movements such as Occupy Wall Street) should be seen in relation to a failure of global mainstream journalism to critically engage with issues such as post-9/11 geo-politics, the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan, and the global financial crisis. In other words, that these groups have filled a vacuum left by large-scale commercial media.
